Sometime February of this year, my classmate from Baguio City approached me and confided that there are several Persons With Disability (PWD’s) in Barangay Silangan, San Mateo, Rizal, wherein majority of them need help in terms of food and there are some in need of wheelchairs. I did not waste time in communicating with the President of this organization, we immediately sat down and talk of a possibility of helping these individuals. At first, i only offered a feeding project and at the same time, distribution of biscuits to these kids.

I brought this project to our club and with no hesitation, the board approved an amount that suffice for the feeding and distribution of biscuits. On March 25, 2012, Immediate Past President Lion Jojo Sta. Ana and i have the chance to look at how the life of these PWD’s. It really melted my heart as i saw these almost hopeless individuals lined up waiting for us. I figured different sickness or disability to these children, there were malnourished, autistic children, blind, deaf, mute and many more disabilities. While we are feeding these children, we imagine how hopeless they are but on the other hand, i also saw how joyful they were when they saw us. To their minds, as if they saw a saviour coming to rescue them in the midst of darkness. Unfortunately, we can only give so much as we are dependent on the funds that we have in our club.

While having their meryenda, a boy in a stroller struck my attetion. This boy is already 12 years old but he looked like about 5 years old. I found out the this boy cannot walk due to the tb of the bone sicknesss. While i was talking to this kid, i learned from his sister that this boy is really eager to go to school, Special Education for Children or what they call as SPED. The sister requested for a wheelchair if it is possible. Another is a young girl i saw in a picture that totally cannot stand up because of her situation, that this young girl’s life was already spent in the bed. Again, i included this in our agenda during the Board Meeting and asked for funds that will be used in buying wheelchairs for these two children. In our club, if it benefits people, they always have the heart to approved funds needed to help our brothers and sisters in need.

AS the fund was handed to me, I ask one of my salesmen to buy the wheelchairs last Saturday. Fortunately, we found good quality with reasonable price. This afternoon, Lion Ogie, Lion Claire and I went to Barangay Silangan and finally hand the 2 wheelchairs to the beneficiaries and they were really glad and so much joy brings out from their faces. The 12 year old kid said that finally he can go to school this coming school year, apart from the joy that he will finally go outside of their house to play. While the other one, even if he cannot talk, picture of gladness was written all over her face, as if saying”now i can enjoy my life”. To fellow Cubao Lions, especially Lions Ogie and Claire, thank you very much for joining me giving joy and hope to the two kids. To my fellow board, thank you for you generosity and willingness to approved and released funds for the needy. Indeed, Quezon City Cubao Lions are ever ready to extend help to the hopeless people in our society. MABUHAY QUEZON CITY CUBAO LIONS CLUB.

On behalf of my family, i would like to thank all members of Quezon City Cubao Lions Club for the support and efforts that they have rendered for this Lion Year. Joining in this service organization is a great opportunity to reach people that need help in the prevailing life struggle. It is an opportunity to extend help to these people who, in one way or another are clamoring for more assistance in life that any organization can provide. Our club, the Quezon City Cubao Lions club has a rich tradition in doing these service projects that help our less fortunate brothers and sisters. That is why, every Lion Year, we always have to think of an innovation and new ways of servicing the needy. We have to think of a fund raising that can fund our service projects to maximize our efforts in helping people. This year is no different, as, I aim to fulfill what the objectives of our club in service and in administrative activities. The first thing i did is to think of a fund raising that will give the club a huge leap in terms of funding our service projects. The fun run that we initiated is one of the innovations apart from the usual golf tournament our club usually did. Fortunately enough, we succeeded in this first organized fun run and we were able to collect funds that suffice the needs of our club and even share some to our foundations (the Street Children and Scholarship Foundations).

But innovation doesn’t stop as we wanted to extend more and more help to our community via all the projects that we are doing. Our club likewise wanted more awareness and promoting what Lionism is all about and what our club has been doing. With this, we created our website that everybody can have the chance to view and update what Quezon City Cubao Lions Club is all about. This was very effective that during the typhoon Ondoy in 2009, countless number of people and even organizations sent their donations to our club for the relief mission of QCCLC in various part on Metro Manila. There were also different Lions Club, like the Houston Millennium Lions Club, Lions Clubs in India, Japan and even a Club in Autralia gave their share just to be able to help.
Our Club doesn’t stop there as we wanted more. Last month, one of our club members ,Lion Abe Dumlao, a past president and incumbent President of Quezon City Cubao Lions Club Scholarship Foundation made another innovation that only Quezon City Cubao Lions Club can do. This we call the CLUB’S E-NEWS LETTER. But don’t be deceived, because not only our club members can view our E-News Letter but even Lions around the world for as long as they have email addresses. At this early, i would like to extend my congratulations to Lion Abe Dumlao and to all club members for innovating this e-news letter that makes awareness so easy to access and can easily understand what Lions are doing. Content of this e-news are very informative like our projects, meetings other service and administrative activities and even how to become a Lion.

Thank you once again to all the club members and especial mention to Lion Abe Dumlao, whose talent is a great contribution to our club…Mabuhay Quezon City Cubao Lions Club.

Fourth year students of the College of Accountancy in Polytechnic University of the Philippines must first take up and pass a series of evaluation exams in each of the four CPA board exam subjects namely Practical Accounting- Part 1, Practical Accounting- Part 2, Business Law and Taxation, and Management Advisory Services. Using the zero-based grading system, a student must at least obtain an overall average of 75% in the aforementioned subjects without a grade lower than 65% in each subject. Failure to achieve these requirements could result in taking up a removal exam or not be able to take part in the commencement exercise in May 2012.

Fortunately I was able to conquer the evaluation exams but almost half of the senior students in BS Accountancy did not make the cut. The road to this success had not been pretty. On the first evaluation I remembered that our faces had the same expression after the Practical Accounting- Part 2 examination, plain gloomy. Stress was starting to build up on me during the month of the second evaluation. Not only do I have to create a margin of safety in each subject but I also needed to make up for the last evaluation exam. The examination was taken and results were released. Just the same, our expressions didn’t change but this time it was because of Business Law and Taxation. As the third evaluation draws nearer, internal and external pressures were creeping up on me. My parents were already asking when will be the graduation and how much would the expenses be in order for them to prepare for it. I couldn’t answer them properly at that. I was beginning to doubt myself. Same thoughts popped in my mind over and over. What have I done wrong? Wasn’t my efforts enough? What if I failed, how was I going to explain to my parents and to the Q C Cubao Lions Club that I needed to take up summer classes and could not graduate on May 2012? We only have two evaluation exams left. I have to make it work. The third evaluation went by unexpectedly smooth. I’m not worried anymore with Practical Accounting- Part 1 and Management Advisory Services. I had created enough margin of safety on those two subjects. My only concern was to catch up in Practical Accounting- Part 2 and Business Law and Taxation. The fourth evaluation was just three weeks away from the third evaluation. Our final exams on Auditing in a Computer Information System Environment and Applied Auditing were also fast approaching. Stress and pressure had already heightened up. I started praying for a miracle that our college would lower the passing rate or use a different grading system for the benefit of everyone. But I guess we shouldn’t get our hopes up since we knew that was far from happening. Relatives and neighbors kept asking when the ‘big day’ is. Only one chance left but a lot of people to please. Then it came to me that the greatest challenge I’m facing was to decide what was important and to disregard everything else. There and then I knew what I had to do. I should focus on the task at hand, believe in myself, and most importantly, pray that everything would turn out for the best. I only needed to earn a few more percentages compared to others who needed to get a perfect score in the examination in order to make it. So to speak, I had a better shot at it. Final exams and the fourth evaluation ended. Thank God. Alas, I came out victorious.

I’ll never forget my 2nd semester of the school year 2011-2012 in PUP in order to graduate in May 11, 2012. Each and every one struggled and gave our best shot to achieve what we wanted. At the end of the day, the sleepless nights; the dark circles under our eyes; the group study sessions; the hard work and pressures involved; the sacrifices of those people who helped me make it through specially my family and friends for their support and the Q C Cubao Lions Club who had given me a life-changing opportunity, that is to pursue a college education; and of course the tears poured were all worth it. I’m now one step closer in reaching my goals in life.

The Quezon City Cubao Lions Club organized a summer treat for the children of Nayon ng Kabataan particularly those from the Lions Streetchildren Center (Center), a.k.a. Bahay Magalang. Last April 15, 24 boys ages 4-12 were treated by Club members to the fun rides at Circle of Fun in Quezon Memorial Circle.

This activity is an annual event of the Q C Cubao Lions capping a series of visits by the members during the year. Club President Nonie Esmedia had organized the visits to Nayon ng Kabataan following a long standing tradition of the Club to create public awareness and help street children return to mainstream through a comprehensive rehabilitation program. Usual activities during the visits include movie showing, parlor games, and bonding sessions.

Children in the Center are usually referred by police and local government officials after they are rescued from the streets and endorsed to Nayon ng Kabataan management, which is an institution for children under the Department of Social Welfare and Development – National Capital Region.
